Hiring During the Pandemic

Wednesday, July 22, 2020

As governments are hesitantly lifting lockdown restrictions, many organizations are ratcheting up their operations, including hiring. However, as health concerns still weigh heavily on many leaders’ minds, these organizations are amending their traditional hiring practices by adopting new tools, policies, and practices. One of the primary ways this is happening is by increasing flexibility in hiring practices. Normal timelines for onboarding should be extended due to the practical restrictions of the post-COVID-19 world, and new technologies can be implemented to help new hires get acclimated. Regular video calls with key players in an organization's hiring process such as direct managers and human resources personnel should be scheduled and these same technologies can be used to help introduce them to team members in a less formal setting. It can also be helpful to consider implementing a learning management system to help with the administration, delivery, and analysis of the training modules that are currently in place. Finally, it’s important to prioritize the social and personal elements of work life. Low expectation, fun activities can help new team members feel more at ease when starting a new position.
