One-Size-Fits-All Wellness Programs Rarely Work

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

Wellness programs seem like a great way to boost employee morale and improve overall productivity; however, more often than not, these programs are executed poorly, receive lackluster support, and end up dying on the vine. One of the primary reasons for these failures is that most of the time, such programs are deployed using a one-size-fits-all model. Employees, however, have drastically different needs when it comes to wellness. One middle manager might run triathlons, while their office mate is struggling to lose 20 pounds to no longer qualify as obese. These individuals have wildly different health needs, and a well-crafted employee wellness program will cater to both. Flexible solutions need to be built from the bottom up, instead of focusing so broadly on health concerns as a concept that nothing gets done. Heath screenings can be offered alongside educational programs with the goal that each employee should be striving to improve their own physical health rather than reach the same goal as everyone else. By building this type of wellness program into a corporate culture, business leaders can ensure their employees will be happier and healthier.
