Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Trainers

(Alexandria, VA) January 11, 2022—In Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Trainers (ATD Press, January 2022), organization development, coaching, and facilitation expert Maria Morukian provides this timely and first-ever guide to help trainers develop their skills as DEI trainers with a focus on embedding DEI into the broader organizational fabric.

While much has been written about DEI for human resource professionals to help them hire, retain, and advance employees from all walks of life, practical guidance for trainers trying to learn how to integrate DEI into their work has been scarce. With the complexity of diversity, equity, and inclusion work, there is not a clear path to follow for those who want to learn. Many trainers who want to use their roles to advance DEI have had to forge their own way, learning as they go.

“Although there are now benchmarks for DEI success and best practices to follow, the field is continuing to evolve, and there is no centralized certifying body for DEI to ensure that practitioners have a shared set of skills and knowledge. This book offers trainers an end to going it alone,” states Morukian. “The book covers how to assess where an organization is on its DEI journey, how to design and facilitate meaningful DEI training, and how trainers can do their own work and examine their own biases and perspectives.”

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Trainers comes at a pivotal time. Society is at a turning point that demands individuals and institutions focus on DEI as an imperative. The workforce is more global and demographically diverse than ever, and social polarization has continued to push people into identity-based camps that foster distrust, disregard, and hatred.

In the past two years, with the increasing tensions around race relations, the aftermath of race-related murders, and the onset and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, leaders are recognizing the need to act. They realize they must prioritize DEI beyond a one-off workshop and that DEI should be a genuine and consistent part of all their organizational initiatives to address systemic inequalities. The benefits to employees and organizations are more honest, connected, and relevant work and experiences that lead to greater productivity and business sustainability and growth.

“The DEI field needs more skilled practitioners who can provide high-quality training and help embed DEI into organizations in a meaningful way,” states Morukian. “My hope is that this book will serve as a road map for those who are interested in becoming DEI practitioners, as well as those who are charged with integrating DEI principles into organizational training programs, to provide education that cuts through the noise and gives people space for sincere dialogue.”
