In Upskilling and Reskilling: Turning Disruption and Change Into New Capabilities—the latest research report by the Association for Talent Development (ATD)—results show that just over a third of organizations provide both upskilling and reskilling. Further, 16 percent provide upskilling only and just 4 percent provide reskilling only. Taken together, just over half of organizations provide one or both.

The report defines upskilling as training designed to augment existing skills with new or significantly enhanced knowledge or skills to enable individuals to continue and succeed in the same profession or field of work. Upskilling does not refer to normal, ongoing development offered to upgrade knowledge or skills in the course of business. Reskilling, however, is defined as training designed to help individuals gain new knowledge or skills to enable them to perform new jobs or enter new professions.

The purpose of this report is to identify the current trends in organizations’ upskilling and reskilling practices. The report also explores the main drivers behind these initiatives as well as the effectiveness of each program. Included are insights and recommendations from subject matter experts on how talent development professionals can improve their upskilling and reskilling efforts.
