Women in Tech Face Unique Challenges

Monday, December 12, 2016

In the tech industry, women are powerful voices but generally underrepresented. This makes it difficult for them to develop their talents, collaborate with others, and push their careers and organizations forward. To deal with this, managers must understand the differences between the male and female experience in the tech world. According to a report compiled by Catalyst, a nonprofit organization supporting women's career development, women in tech face two major issues. The first hurdle is their supervisory relationships. Women in tech are less satisfied with their supervisors than any other subgroup of employees when it comes to feedback, communication, and access. They are also the least likely group to say their managers are responsive to suggestions and willing to take action. Additionally, mistrust and unfairness are major concerns at the professional level for women in the tech industry. Only 49 percent of women in technical roles think their manager's decisions are fair, and 54 percent think management trusts their judgment—less than any other role.
