Uber Working to Be More Inclusive in Hiring

Tuesday, March 28, 2017

Rideshare company Uber released its first diversity report since its foundation in 2009. Its numbers seem to be on par with the rest of the tech industry, which is not good. Of the company’s 12,000 employees, less than 40 percent are women. Black and Hispanic employees together make up about 15 percent of the workforce, while white and Asian employees make up a staggering 80 percent. But it’s not all bad news; in the last year, Uber doubled its workforce, and 41 percent of the new hires were women. Around 15 percent of these new hires were also working on visas from 71 different countries. “In recruiting, we’ve updated our job descriptions to remove potentially exclusionary language, and we are running interview training to make our hiring processes more inclusive for women in tech,” the company wrote in a blog post. “We’re also rolling out training to educate and empower employees, covering topics like 'why diversity and inclusion matters,' 'how to be an ally,' and 'building inclusive teams.' Training is not a panacea, but educating employees on the right behaviors is an important step in the right direction.”
