What’s Covered on the Exam?

For a detailed blueprint of the exam and its topics, review the APTD exam content outline. Based on the Talent Development Capability Model, the APTD exam focuses on how foundational knowledge is applied in practice across three domains:

Personal Capabilities: 20%
Professional Capabilities: 50%
Organizational Capabilities: 30%

What is the Full Exam Format?

Exam time: 2 hours
Exam length: 115 multiple choice questions
Delivery: Computer-based

Exam Fee

The exam fee covers your exam seat, score report, and your certification package (certificate and lapel pin) upon passing. Preparation materials are optional and aren’t included in the fee. Here’s what to expect:

Members: $525 | Non-members: $800

Refund and Eligibility Policy

Exam fees are nonrefundable. If you’re found ineligible, you’ll receive a partial refund, minus a $275 processing fee. For complete details, review the APTD Handbook.

When and Where to Test

Select a 90-day testing window during application.
Each window includes a 30-day blackout period.
Exams can be taken at testing centers around the world or in a secure location via remote proctoring.

APTD Exam Windows and Deadlines

Here’s what you need to know to plan your APTD exam:

When Exams Are Offered: APTD exams take place every other month, starting with January.
Choosing Your Testing Window: You select your testing window when you submit your application.
When to Apply: Submit your application between 30 to 365 days before your chosen exam window.
Changing Your Window: Need to switch windows? Changes require approval and a $275 window transfer fee.

How to Register

Candidates must apply and receive approval to take the exam.

Apply through the ATD certification portal. First-time users may need to complete profile details.
If you require special accommodations, including medical devices, please review the APTD Certification Handbook before applying.

Schedule Your Exam

Your submitted application must be reviewed and approved before you can schedule to test. There are two ways to schedule:

1. Receive the “Authorization to Test” email from Pearson, follow the link to schedule.
2. Use the Certification Portal. Follow the Schedule Exam menu option.

Select the date and time available within your testing window, choose to test remotely or in person, then select your preferred language.

Pearson will immediately email the appointment confirmation.
