(Alexandria, VA) January 16, 2024—In Instructional Design on a Shoestring (Association for Talent Development, January 2024), L&D expert Brian Washburn offers a crash course on how to immediately apply a widely used instructional design model, ADDIE (analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate), to develop training programs.

For those lacking a background in training and development but who are asked to develop some sort of training program or other learning initiative to help turn things around for their organization, this book provides a structure, models, resources, and job aids to help ensure that every instructional design project—even (and especially) when on a shoestring—has the best chance of success. Using the Build-Borrow-Buy approach, Washburn presents options to implement when resources—time, money, and staff—are constrained.

Washburn comments, “I’ve designed every chapter, piece of content, and reproducible job aid to help you immediately apply basic (and sometimes advanced) concepts of instructional design when you’re working with limited resources. This book is about figuring out what the best learning solution might be and whether learning is even the solution.”

This book isn’t focused solely on instructor-led training or e-learning development. It includes comments and examples of instructional design on a shoestring for in-person training; virtual sessions; asynchronous, self-guided e-learning programs; and everything in between. Many of the examples, resources, and job aids can be applied to all sorts of learning projects.

With Instructional Design on a Shoestring, the Association for Talent Development introduces the second book in the On a Shoestring series, which helps professionals successfully execute core topics in training and talent development when facing limitations of time, money, staff, and other resources. These books are designed for practitioners who work as a department of one, new or “accidental” trainers, instructional designers, learning managers who need fast, inexpensive access to practical strategies that work, and those who work for small organizations or in industries that have limited training and development resources.
