AI Might Predict Your Next Promotion

Thursday, July 12, 2018

Artificial intelligence (AI) might soon be used to determine promotions and pay raises. While this might sound dystopian, it’s already being put into practice. Big Blue has been using AI and IBM’s Watson Analytics to examine the experience and past projects of employees to predict the qualities and skills individuals will need to better serve the company in the future. The software also keeps track of what training the employees have undertaken to further understand their skills and abilities. These assessments can be made into a rating system for managers to make better decisions on bonuses, raises, and promotions. "Traditional models said if you were a strong performer in your current job, that was the singular way that you got a promotion," said Nickle LaMoreaux, vice president for compensation and benefits at IBM. "Well, we certainly still care about performance," she told Bloomberg. This performance is hypothetical, of course; but IBM claims Watson is able to predict with 96 percent accuracy.
