Communication Skills Are Critical

Thursday, November 1, 2018

When it comes to personal success, soft skills are often just as important as experience and know-how. Communication is one of those skills that, regardless of industry, is critically important for getting ahead. You can be the best in your field, but if you’re unable to communicate effectively, it’s unlikely you’ll ever realize your true potential. Business is all about relationships, and the only way to foster strong relationships is through interpersonal communication skills. There are three things to consider when working on communication: One—everything you say will either support your goal or put a wedge between you and it. Two—listeners are much more inclined to consider what you’re saying if you’re coming from a place of respect and compassion rather than judgment and criticism. Three—to really connect, it’s important to know who your audience is before you communicate and do your best to match their style, vocabulary, and tone without coming off as pandering. This helps the audience (or listener) feel validated.

Absolutely! Whether you communicate verbally or in writing, it's always essential to consider what you say from the listener's perspective. Preparing a presentation by thinking "What do I want to tell them?" vs. "What do they need to hear for me to reach my objective?" can make a major difference in your success rate.
