French Government Fights Digital Burnout

Monday, May 16, 2016

The French government wants to protect the work-life balance of its people by limiting the time employees can send work-related emails. Under the proposed legislation, businesses with more than 50 employees would be required to draft workplace rules setting out the hours when employees are prohibited from conducting virtual work. The bill is now going to the French Senate for approval. The legislation is considered by some to be forward thinking in its attempts to limit the digital burnout felt by many employees across the globe. In the United Kingdom, laws are far more lax. Under the British Working Time Regulations, employees are not permitted to work more than 48 hours each week, averaged over 17 weeks. However, there are opt-out arrangements that can be made. Additionally, checking emails and replying on off hours aren’t figured into the 48-hour guideline. Working time in the United Kingdom is defined as working at the employer’s convenience and carrying out duties; checking email before bed or first thing in the morning wouldn’t be included because the individual is not technically at the employer’s disposal.
