Google Announces Plans to Allow 20 Percent of Employees to Continue Working From Home Indefinitely

Wednesday, May 5, 2021

Although their offices will be reopening later this year, Google announced recently that it expects 20 percent of its employees to continue working from home. This amendment backs-off the company’s pledge in December when they said they planned to have workers spend three days a week in the office. Now the company expects 60 percent of employees to come in part of the time, 20 percent to work from new office locations, and 20 percent to remain fully remote. The shift, however, isn’t a huge stretch for the tech giant. “Before the pandemic, we had thousands of people working in locations separate from their core teams. I fully expect those numbers to increase in the coming months as we develop more remote roles, including fully all-remote sub teams,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote in an email to employees. The offices will remain closed until September, and in June, Google will provide more information on how employees can request to work from home permanently or transfer to satellite offices.
