Managerial Support Critical in Calming Fears About the Future

Tuesday, November 14, 2017

While some workforce experts look at artificial intelligence and automation with trepidation, worried about catastrophic job loss and legions of unemployed workers, others aren’t as pessimistic. It’s important to remember that we’ve been here before and that with consideration, technology can be used to augment work, raising the quality of life for workers, rather than eliminating their jobs. However, navigating this future landscape requires a nimble, adaptable workforce; this is, unfortunately, where we’re missing the mark. According to a recent study conducted by the American Psychological Association, training and development is one of the areas where employees are the least satisfied, and a major cause of workplace stress. While nearly all of the workers surveyed—87 percent—said they were confident about their current job skills, feelings of uncertainty about the future were pervasive. One in four workers said they were worried about the changing nature of their jobs, and only 61 percent said their employer was helping them develop the technical and soft skills they’d need to be successful in the future. This supervisor support, it turns out, is critical in job security. For those who believe they lack managerial support, only 15 percent said their employer was providing them with the right development opportunities. For those with a more supportive supervisor, the figure skyrocketed to 75 percent.
