Earlier this year, the Department of Labor announced changes to overtime pay exemptions. Starting January 1, 2020, the minimum salary needed to be ineligible for overtime pay will be $646 per week or $35,568 per year. Anyone earning less must be paid overtime if they work more than 40 hours in one week. While this is a general rule of thumb, there are some notable exceptions to this rule. Salary is just one element of the exemption qualifications. Some jobs qualify an employee regardless of pay.
