Remote Relationship Building

Tuesday, August 24, 2021

In the times before the pandemic, it seemed like a surreptitious conversation in the breakroom or a perfectly timed elevator ride could lead to professional collaboration and personal friendships in the workplace. Now that a solid chunk of the workforce is working remotely, at least some of the time, it seems that relationship building in the office has become extremely difficult. But difficult doesn’t mean impossible. It is still possible to build meaningful, rich relationships with remote coworkers. First, start by building rapport. Humans, at their most basic level, require connections. This connection is easier face-to-face, but it’s not impossible to find common ground or develop inside jokes over Zoom or Slack. It can also help to prioritize your investment in others. Create value for your coworkers. Help them with their problems, and be on the lookout for ways to create opportunities for them. Even if these efforts are small, they’ll go a long way in fostering connection and building relationships.
