Simulation Training Goes Mainstream

Monday, July 26, 2021

Many industries are looking to automation to improve productivity and reduce overhead. While we mostly think of automation in the manufacturing industry, the training industry is also evolving in the face of this growing trend. Simulation training—or education through digital applications that mimic work—has become increasingly popular in recent years, not only for its efficacy but for its efficiency. There are three main types of simulation training: desktop experience, augmented reality, and full virtual reality simulation. The application depends on the type of training required, and the results of each type of training are in line with how it is delivered. There are many reasons why employers might choose simulation training over more traditional formats— higher levels of engagement, improved retention of material, and lower safety risks. The latter is an interesting topic of discussion in its own right. Virtual reality allows the trainer to place trainees in dangerous work environments to see how they would respond without exposing them to any real-world risk, dramatically improving safety outcomes should these conditions arise in real life. Although simulation training isn’t right for every situation, it is certainly becoming more viable and more universally applicable.
