Tech Training to Drive Retention in Retail

Tuesday, January 31, 2017

A retail job is usually the first position a person will hold, and turnover rates can be very high. However, with technology continuing to disrupt the business models for retailers, it's becoming increasingly important for retailers to find and train highly skilled workers to fill increasingly tech-focused roles. At a panel discussion during the 2017 NRF Big Show, Terry J Lundgren, chairman and CEO of Macy’s, said continual training would help employees better see their potential career paths. He added that because it’s often more difficult to train and retain regular store workers than management in a retail organization, the continual training would provide more skilled workers, and ensure these workers were more likely to stay with their firms. Young people, in particular, he said, are looking for these types of positions and opportunities. Macy’s has been using training programs in several parts of its business to focus on developing and retaining digital talent. About 600 technologists have been employed with the goal of finding opportunities for increasing technological efficiencies within the organization.
