The Consequences of Poor Onboarding and How to Avoid Them

Tuesday, March 14, 2023

Let’s face it. Onboarding is often overlooked. Too many managers feel like handing a new hire the employee handbook, showing them how their task management system works, and setting them up in a cubicle counts. Still, the fact of the matter is that poor onboarding practices for new employees can have dire downstream consequences. For employees, poor onboarding can lead to confusion, frustration, and a lack of understanding about their roles and responsibilities. This can result in decreased job satisfaction, disengagement, and ultimately, turnover. For organizations, poor onboarding can lead to decreased productivity, lower morale, and a negative impact on the bottom line. It can also damage the employer’s brand and make it harder to attract and retain top talent in the future. To avoid these outcomes, organizations must invest in comprehensive onboarding processes including clear communication, training, and support for new employees. Organizations should provide new hires with a clear understanding of the company culture, goals, expectations, opportunities for feedback, and ongoing development. Strong onboarding processes are essential for setting new employees up for success and helping organizations achieve their business objectives.

Onboarding is a process, not an event. New hire training is a part of that process, but it's not the only part or even the most important part. Onboarding is about incorporating the new hire into the organization and more importantly into the team. Managers- get them involved in meeting stakeholders. Don't overwhelm them with a bunch of training they won't use for 3 months because "they have time." Be intentional about how they spend their time. Don't make them look for something to do.

Too many times I have seen new employees sitting at their desk staring at blank computer screens. Onboarding and getting new employees active on day 1 is essential to building confidence and competence.
Great point Rogelio! Engagement and feeling like they are part of the team from day 1 is an essential element of onboarding.
