The Future of Work

Monday, February 4, 2019

Workplace culture is being shaped by a multitude of factors, and the accelerated pace of change will continue to push boundaries in the years to come. PwC chief people officer Mike Fenlon likens the changes to the cyberpunk writer William Gibson’s popular quote, “The future is already here. It’s just not evenly distributed.” Says Fenlon, “What we’re seeing today will be dramatically, dramatically accelerated [in a decade].” By 2030, workplaces will be more decentralized and far more diverse, for one. As organizations are forced to cast wider nets to secure talent, utilizing individuals from new regions and underrepresented demographics will become more commonplace. This will bring with it challenges, particularly when it comes to communication. Finding employees with great communication skills has been difficult in the past, and that gap will likely widen. As technological communications tools become more pervasive, being a “good communicator” isn’t simply going to mean having the ability to tell a compelling story. Master communicators will have to be experts on a wide array of media platforms. Data, and the accuracy of it, will raise issues with privacy and trust. Leaders will need to analyze data to ensure it’s being read correctly and that the decisions made based off of the data are fair and transparent.
