Boosting Creativity During the Pandemic

Monday, February 8, 2021

The global health crisis has been devastating in many ways, but one of the most subtle casualties of the COVID-19 pandemic has been professional creativity. One of the main reasons for this is our lack of exposure to new ideas. During prepandemic times, we’d have impromptu conversations in the breakroom, grab lunch together, or have spontaneous brainstorming sessions. In our isolation, these external generators of creativity are few and far between. To combat this, consider taking a “renaissance” mindset—that is, look for inspiration in various places. Schedule unstructured conversations with colleagues you don’t interact with often. Take an online cooking class. Learn to whittle. Seek to improve your physical and mental fitness to keep yourself sharp. By approaching different problems, you’ll start to see your problems differently. The goal isn’t necessarily to gain new skills; it’s to break up the monotony of the day-to-day to give yourself a fresh perspective.
