First Impressions

Wednesday, January 7, 2015

You only get one chance at a first impression, or so the saying goes. This is true for individuals as well as organizations. First impressions matter, particularly for new employees joining the team. To impress new hires, there are several things managers need to keep in mind during the orientation and onboarding process. One of the first things new hires should be offered is a company tour. This will give new hires a lay of the land and help them meet their new coworkers, creating a comfortable work environment and fostering the likelihood of early success. After employees become established, on-the-job training should be the focus of the first few weeks. More active training will help employees learn faster and become more engaged. While employees are training, setting them up with a mentor can also be beneficial. An experienced mentor will help new hires assimilate, providing new recruits with a go-to person to answer questions and a resource for comments or concerns.
