Sleep and Workplace Wellness

Wednesday, June 22, 2016

Workplace wellness programs are on the rise. Exercise, meditation, and healthy eating practices are all becoming more important. However, there is one element that many wellness programs overlook: a healthy sleep schedule. Recently Andre Iguodala, a star player for the Golden State Warriors basketball team, wanted to improve his game, so he participated in a sleep study. When he got at least eight hours of quality sleep a night, his turnover rate dropped to 41 percent and his points per minute increased 29 percent. “If that’s true for an elite athlete at the top of his game, one of the best in the sport in the world, don’t you think it might be true for your employees?” asks Brad Cooper, wellness expert and CEO of U.S. Corporate Wellness Solutions. He adds that too many programs focus on the messages of diet and exercise, but fail to look at the other factors affecting employee work performance, such as sleep. And if employees didn’t sleep well the night before, they are 46 percent less likely to participate in a workplace exercise session.
