When hiring a new candidate, it’s important for an organization’s leadership to try to see the company, and its management processes, from the new hire’s perspective. To that end, leadership should undergo hiring and onboarding processes to gain this perspective. By engaging in this process, leadership will learn to start things off slowly. If a new hire is overwhelmed, they cannot retain specific information pertinent to their new tasks. But, once they get the swing of things, it’s important to challenge them. Leadership shouldn’t be afraid to present a new hire with achievable goals and responsibilities early on. However, during this process, management should always be available to resolve issues, should they arise. Neither praise nor criticism should be withheld during onboarding, and should be given as it is deserved. Praise is especially important in the first few weeks, as a complete lack of appreciation may cause a new employee to wonder if coming aboard was the right decision.
