Bill Will Require LGBT Cultural Training for DC Healthcare Providers

Tuesday, February 9, 2016

Earlier this month, the Washington, D.C. City Council approved a bill that would require all healthcare professionals to undergo training on the health issues facing the LGBT community. Approved unanimously, the bill is the first of its kind. If passed, the bill would compel all licensed, certified, and registered healthcare workers to complete two credits of cultural competency training focused on establishing relationships with and treating those who are LGBT, gender nonconforming, or questioning. The training will also cover the health risks specific to the LGBT community, overcoming cultural biases, and how best to handle patient information. An impetus for the bill was a recent study, published in the American Journal of Public Health, that demonstrated that many healthcare workers may hold biases tied to their patients’ sexual identities. The bill will now go to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser for signing, and will then undergo a 30-day congressional review period.
