What You Will Learn
  • Assess current strengths in performance consulting competency areas and roles (e.g., Expert, Advisor, Coach, Facilitator, etc.) and identify opportunities for ongoing improvement.
  • Apply ATD’s Performance Consulting Framework (e.g., ethics, critical skills, consulting competency areas, process, methodology, tools, relationship management, and specializations) to enhance their ability to improve clients’ individual, team or organizational performance.
  • Establish and manage a trusting relationship with the client and key stakeholders during an engagement, and beyond.
  • Use the Performance DNA Methodology and tools to gain client alignment and commitment, capture goals and performance gaps, identify key performers, analyze human performance, recognize positive and negative influences on performance, and document findings.

Program Components
Part 1: Fundamentals (Online)
Two weeks prior to the face-to-face component, you’ll join your peers in a private online community to complete self-directed exercises. You’ll be welcomed to the program, invited to network with your facilitator and fellow learners, and given access to key program materials and resources.
Part 2: ATD Master Performance Consultant Core Course (Face-to-Face or Live Online)
The four-day classroom training covers content on a performance-consulting framework and process, analyzing performance to diagnose situations and select solutions, planning and managing engagements, delivering findings and recommendations, implementing and evaluating solutions, client relationship management, and ethical issues in consulting. In addition, you’ll learn how to use essential problem-solving and decision-making methodologies.

Program features include:
  • working with consulting-in-action teams each day to apply learning to a case study and building a cohort learning network
  • assessing critical performance-consulting skills and building your own development plan
  • opportunities to practice and improve your delivery, including elevator speeches, skill demonstrations using an actual client presentation you select, and a case study team presentation
  • tips for selecting your capstone performance consulting project
  • a knowledge assessment to confirm your capabilities that can be completed at any time during the program.
Class size is limited to 16 to provide more comprehensive and tailored learning.

Part 3: Elective and Capstone Performance Consulting Project
The final component to your success in the program is the capstone consulting project based on a performance challenge from your workplace. This multifaceted, active learning project will help you demonstrate the critical knowledge, competencies, methodologies, and tools acquired in the program in a real-world setting. It must be submitted within three months after the core course. This is required for course completion.

You also must pass a 20-question assessment to demonstrate mastery of the content of this program. You may take this at any time during the program and can retake it until you achieve a passing score.

Finally, should you choose to do so, you’ll continue your personalized learning experience by completing a complimentary elective course (online or face-to-face) of your choice to help you address your own unique professional development needs. You may choose from any ATD certificate program (except for the Training Design and Delivery Certificate program) or any Essentials series. The CPLP Prep, APTD Prep, Elements, and another Master Series are not included in the complimentary option.

ATD estimates approximately three to four months to successfully complete the entire program.

Keep in mind the ATD Master Performance Consultant Program is a unique and robust assessment-based program. If you are interested in strengthening your ability in performance improvement but are not interested in committing to the ATD Master Performance Consultant assessment component, capstone performance consulting project, or timeframe, consider the Improving Human Performance program.

To ensure you gain the most from this advanced-level program, you must meet the following criteria to participate:

  1. a minimum of three years in the performance consulting profession
  2. demonstrated knowledge of the human performance improvement process and steps
  3. ability to identify standard practices of performance consultants
  4. completion of a foundational ATD certificate program, such as the ATD Improving Human Performance Certificate (preferred, not required).

Things to Know


Face-to-Face Certificate Courses
Participation in all originally scheduled days of the program is mandatory in order to receive the certificate of completion and CEUs. Participants who miss more than two hours of the entire program will not be eligible to receive the certificate. Participants who fulfill the attendance requirement will receive a certificate at the end of the program.

Online Certificate Courses
Participation in all online sessions at their currently scheduled day and time is mandatory to receive a completion certificate and any applicable credits.

ATD requires active participation through the program to receive credit for the class. Active participation includes, but is not limited to, participating in virtual classroom activities, discussions, breakout sessions, and intersession work. Please note that using a tablet or mobile device severely limits your ability to fully and actively participate.

For programs with five or more sessions, one missed live session can be made up by listening to the session recording in full. Participants who miss more than one live session will not be eligible to receive the certificate. For programs with four or fewer sessions, attendance at all live sessions is required to receive a certificate. If you meet the eligibility requirements, a certificate will be issued to you through the ATD Learning Portal at the end of the program. All sessions will be recorded and available for participants to review throughout the program for your reference.

This program has been approved for 28.0 (General) recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR, and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute.
