When it comes to training, some topics are best handled in house. Airbnb, which is expected to reach $10 billion in revenue by 2020, is betting that tech skills are among them. The company recently opened its own data science university, where they will teach top talent new skills and recruit from within their own ranks, creating a paradigm many companies may want to explore. There are many benefits for a company running their own tech incubators, such as the ability to relate lessons to real-life situations. “A company can share so many real-life scenarios as part of a tech course,” says Chalmers Brown of Due. “Not only does this make a course more informative, but it also makes it more interesting. Also, students can better relate to the instructions they are receiving.” Additionally, such programs can help reduce employee turnover. “Companies used to invest in training their own employees. Nowadays, far too many companies rely on their employees to fine-tune and adopt new skills on their own time,” says Daniel Hindi of BuildFire. “The main fear is that, if you train your employees, then they will leave you for a better offer. Most would rather grow where they are already comfortable. As long as they don't hit a ceiling, they'll be loyal.”
