UK May Close Cyber Skills Gap With Apprenticeships

Tuesday, November 21, 2017

The United Kingdom is experiencing a severe lack of skilled cybersecurity professionals—with many reports indicating it may be facing the largest personnel shortage in the world. This is particularly alarming because the United Kingdom is one of the world's leading digital countries. However, other countries aren’t doing much better. Across the globe, there has been a 20 percent increase in cybersecurity positions over the last year, but there will be a global shortfall of almost 2 million by 2022. One reason for this widening skills gap is a lack of computing classes. According to the Royal Society, 54 percent of English schools don’t offer computer science classes, and schools consistently fail to recruit enough teachers qualified for these positions. The answer may come from an unlikely place—the trades. Apprenticeships, common in the trade world, will help individuals accumulate the skills they need to be successful in a cybersecurity position, and give them the experience necessary to enter this workforce with confidence.
