Appreciation and Support Are Critical as the Pandemic Drags On

Tuesday, October 6, 2020

As the pandemic continues to disrupt organizations and personal lives, it’s important that managers consider the impact the ongoing crisis is having on their team members. The stress and isolation of working remotely are certainly taking their toll on many, leading to decreased productivity, burnout, and even turnover. Above all, leaders who are concerned with the wellbeing of their teams need to take this moment to appreciate and support them. According to a recent study, even small tokens of appreciation such as an email thanking them for a job well done or receiving a shoutout in a weekly team call go a long way in helping employees feel validated—a critical notion during a time where job uncertainty and stress about the future is running high. Support is also crucial at this juncture. Leaders need to show an understanding of their team members’ needs, preferences, and circumstances as it relates to work arrangements and flows. Individualized support was extremely important at the start of the pandemic, and it’s crucial as it continues to drag on.
