Embracing Individual Sleep Schedules Increases Productivity

Sunday, November 26, 2017

As technology shifts and workplaces are becoming more fluid, employers and employees alike are beginning to question the notion of the traditional 9-to-5 workday. This rigid schedule doesn’t work for everyone for a variety of reasons, perhaps the greatest of which is an individual’s sleep schedule. Not everyone sleeps the same—some need more sleep, some need less. Some people are night owls, and some people are early birds. Depending on a person’s particular sleep makeup, their periods of productivity will differ, but this doesn’t mean one schedule is better than another. For a long time, late risers were considered lazy, and napping during the middle of the day was frowned upon; however, with an increased focus on individuality in the workplace and more flexible, accommodating schedules, managers are starting to get more out of every worker, regardless of sleep pattern. What’s more, by embracing these differences, managers are finding they can get the most out of their teams. Knowing not to force everyone into one particular schedule can lead to fewer breaks, fewer post-lunch slumps, and a more productive day overall.
