Kickstart Your Onboarding Experience

Thursday, August 12, 2021

The importance of a good first impression has been stressed in the professional world for decades, but only recently are organizations realizing that this is a two-way street. The first few days, weeks, and months are a critical time period for new employees—one that will set the cadence for their tenure with your organization and dictate whether they will be successful in their new role. Unfortunately, not many companies get this right. According to Gallup research, only 12 percent of US employees said their organization does a good job onboarding new employees, and the proliferation of virtual employment is complicating matters. In fact, one in five employees said that their most recent onboarding experience was poor or that they didn’t receive any onboarding at all. If leaders want to turn this trend around, they first need to find ways to build better connections—particularly for new remote workers who may feel isolated and detached from the culture. Prioritizing learning experiences is one great way to do this. Think outside the box, though. Learning needs to transcend role-specific training and involve team members who may not otherwise interact with each other.
