Learning Lessons From the Construction Industry

It shouldn't come as a surprise that employee engagement is low in the United States, but despite talk of dissatisfied employees, there are certain fields in which employees are actually content. One sector in particular enjoys high levels of engagement—the construction and facility services industry. According to a recent survey of more than 30,000 employees from more than 500 organizations, construction and facility services workers are among the happiest employees in the country. So what lessons can other industries learn? For one, construction and facility services is economically strong. Bouncing back from a recession low in 2010, the sector is enjoying job creation and economic opportunity. But while managers can't influence the economy, there are several things they can implement in their workplaces that the construction industry has been getting right for years. The survey revealed three of the biggest issues standing in the way of employee happiness and engagement: managers who are not supportive, not having the tools needed to succeed, and not having the opportunity for professional growth.
