Questions to Ask in Determining if an Organization Values Its Employees

Friday, December 4, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused upheaval in the business world, and talent was not immune. Many valuable employees found their positions dissolved during reorganizations, were furloughed, or were otherwise asked to leave. With that in mind, it’s important in a job search to seek out organizations that value their employees—and it behooves hiring managers to demonstrate their organizations do. Start by asking (or by having great answers to) these questions. First, what is the PTO policy, and how does it work in practice? Do bereavement policies only apply to immediate family members? Will your workload prevent you from enjoying the unlimited time-off policy? Second, ask about how employees are recognized for their work. Are there formal practices in place, or are rewards more informal? Finally, gain an understanding of the organization’s talent development philosophy. A well-run organization will have a formal development program that defines career paths and the steps necessary for promotion. Although unemployment is high, it pays to be selective when choosing your next organization.
