Updating Onboarding

Wednesday, May 11, 2016

One of employers' leading concerns is the possibility of losing good employees to attrition. And this fear is not misplaced; it’s a tall order to keep employees engaged, productive, and on board, especially when it comes to younger talent. However, many employers are experimenting with new ways to alter their workplaces and practices to keep younger individuals satisfied. The first step is to examine the onboarding process. One of the fastest ways to lose an employee is by dropping the ball during this critical phase. Burger King recently made the news for hiring rapper Snoop Dogg to participate in their internal employee training video and securing comedian Charo to appeal to Spanish-speaking employees. And while most companies don’t have the resources to hire A-list celebrities for training materials, there are other ways to ensure that the onboarding process is successful. The concept of gamified onboarding, or bringing the reward elements from video games into the onboarding process, is becoming increasingly popular. Cosmetics company Lush uses gamified tools to train their employees on new products in story-based “Lush Quests” that incorporate quizzes. These quests allow several hundred employees to download and “play” through their training simultaneously.
