Immigration Policy Could Affect Skills Gap

Tuesday, February 24, 2015

The U.S. economy’s reliance on industries that are demonstrating a lack of skilled professionals to fill positions is growing. However, some experts believe immigration reform could help close the ever-widening skills gap. Passing legislation to loosen restrictions on visas for skilled workers in the STEM fields as well as lower-skilled workers in key sectors like agriculture, construction, and hospitality would help the economy by filling the skill and population gaps in the workforce. Measures such as the Immigration Innovation Act of 2015 would increase the cap of workers allowed entry into the United States, with the potential for growth based on demand. Additionally, bills are moving through Congress that would allow workers to stay in the country for longer periods of time, a factor that could provide more certainty for businesses. Other currently undocumented individuals would also qualify for legal status, thus widening the tax base and talent pool.
