Designing Scenarios and Roleplays With AI: Course Info

Content

Scenario-based learning—presenting learners with realistic situations and letting them make choices that drive the outcome—is one of the most effective ways to develop real-world skills in e-learning courses. But branching scenarios are often expensive and time-consuming to build, so most teams settle for linear, click-through courses that learners quickly forget. This hands-on workshop changes that, showing you how to design realistic, multipath branching scenarios and AI-powered roleplay simulations to support workplace learning in a fraction of the time.

You’ll bring a real, difficult workplace interaction to the workshop—a customer complaint, tough negotiation, or performance conversation—and turn it into scenario-based training using AI tools. In the design session, you’ll map the scenario’s branching logic using a reusable visual blueprint , then write and live-test an AI character persona : a roleplay partner with a consistent emotional state, believable objections, and a distinct communication style. In the build session, you’ll design realistic consequence-based feedback that shows learners the impact of their choices, then structure the script into a clean, import-ready format for Articulate Storyline and other tools.

Throughout the workshop, you’ll work as the e-learning scenario architect—deciding which choices matter, what outcomes feel realistic, and where AI versus human judgment shapes the story. AI accelerates the drafting; instructional-design judgment remains yours .

Access to an AI large language model (LLM) such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini is recommended for the roleplay and drafting activities. Access to a branching-capable authoring tool—Articulate Storyline is the default, but Rise or Captivate are acceptable alternatives—is recommended for the build portion but not required for participation. Because you first design in portable, tool-neutral formats, a missing tool never blocks the design work, and a shared fallback environment and import template cover any gaps. Specific tool requirements will be confirmed prior to the session.
