Managers: Consider Writing Down the Unspoken Rules of Your Workplace

Monday, October 26, 2020

Every workplace has unwritten rules that guide the culture. However, during periods of uncertainty, it might be helpful to put down exactly what these policies are in writing. This doesn't mean setting hard and fast rules about how long lunch breaks can be; think of it rather as a list of permissions. Given that many have shifted to remote work with little training this year, it might be helpful to write down the acceptable practices that have evolved such as, “It's okay to: turn off your video during longer calls if you need a break; shift hours earlier or later to accommodate family commitments; have a child pop into a call; block off time for focused work,” and so forth. “This list of permissions has helped organizations get a handle on the dramatic cultural shifts spurred by the global pandemic. It was clear things had changed since my team started working from home, but no one had acknowledged them,” Matt Reiter, director of World 50, said. “There are things I know it's okay to do, but that knowledge comes from my seniority and time at the company. If it’s OK for me to take a mental health day, it’s OK for you as well.”
