Employers Are Prioritizing Soft Skills

Because of the disruption that AI and automation will cause in the workforce, IBM released a report that estimated 120 million workers worldwide will need to be retrained. With that in mind, business leaders are focusing less on employees’ hard skills and more on the intangible qualities and skill sets when hiring and making decisions about advancement. According to a recent report from LinkedIn, three skills top leaders’ priority lists: leadership and management, creative problem-solving and design thinking, and communication. “Companies today want employees who can solve difficult challenges and dream up creative and innovative ideas that technologies cannot replicate,” says Tanya Staples, vice president of product and content at LinkedIn Learning. In a separate report, LinkedIn found hiring managers are looking for similar skill sets when interviewing candidates, but given the high cost of new hires and a tight labor market, many organizations are looking to retrain current workers and develop skills in their existing labor force.
