AI Might Democratize Workplaces

Saturday, January 19, 2019

Many labor market experts view artificial intelligence with trepidation; they are worried AI will be hugely disruptive and that as its applications become more widespread, vast numbers of human employees will be displaced, creating an economic crisis. However, this is not necessarily the case. Many feel AI will be not a destructive force but an empowering one, taking over menial tasks and allowing employees to focus on higher-level tasks and coming up with more creative solutions. There also might be unintended benefits, such as making the workplace more equitable. For instance, take a typical workplace meeting: Business meetings generally reinforce corporate hierarchies by establishing clear roles, and as a consequence, unintended biases can take root. However, if AI technologies like smart assistants are utilized, meetings can be restructured and democratized. Note takers will no longer be needed and can join the conversation as value-adding participants rather than simply stenographers. The result would be more junior-level employees thinking creatively and bringing unique solutions to the table rather than concentrating on taking notes for their more senior (legacy thinking) bosses and managers.
