Create Better Mental Health Outcomes for Employees by Increasing Autonomy and Support

Tuesday, November 27, 2018

The mental health of your employees can have a serious impact on business outcomes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about 80 percent of adults who suffer from depression report at least some difficulty with their personal and professional lives as a direct result of their symptoms. Unfortunately, mental health issues are generally a taboo subject in the workplace, and employees overwhelmingly want their employers to take up the cause. In fact, according to a survey conducted by Peldon Rose last summer, 72 percent of employees said they want their employers to be more proactive about the workforce’s mental health and well-being. One of the best ways to do this, according to Thomas Chamorro Premuzic, chief talent scientist for ManpowerGroup, is to ensure workers experience their jobs in meaningful and purposeful ways. “This can be achieved by giving employees autonomy and resources,” Premuzic said. “If your team experiences support and independence, and that you trust them to do what they ought to do, they will generally be happier at work, which will reduce the risk of mental health problems.”
