The Rise of Millennial Bosses

Tuesday, January 1, 2019

While some tend to think of Millennials as children, the fact of the matter is the oldest of this cohort are well into their 30s, and increasingly in positions of leadership. And this generational shift has brought with it changing attitudes in the way workplaces are managed. One of the most important changes, according to new research, is a shift in values. A recent survey of 155 Millennial bosses revealed their top priorities are humanist. These bosses want to create positive work cultures, foster strong relationships with their employees, and care for the whole person, not just the professional portion of that individual. They also want their work to have a positive impact on the world around them and refuse to engage in work that doesn’t. About 53 percent of the Millennial managers surveyed said they became entrepreneurs because they believed that was the best way to make a difference, and 46 percent said providing a service or product that enriches the lives of their customers is the best way to affect positive social change. “We have only one shot at leaving a legacy on this planet. Entrepreneurship gives us the highest probability of effecting change,” said Matt Wilson, co-founder and CEO of Under30Experiences, a travel company for young people.
