Good Leaders Ask for Help

Monday, January 21, 2019

When things go wrong, everyone looks to the leader to pull them out of the mire. Strong leaders are able to do so; and with this ability to navigate complexities and operate gracefully under pressure, leaders might begin to feel super-human. However, relying exclusively on one’s own strength isn’t a viable plan for success. In reality, acknowledging weaknesses and flaws and being willing to ask for help is what separates serviceable leaders from the greats. Hiding weakness in an attempt to appear strong never works, but realizing our humanity and asking for help to overcome our shortcomings is an essential part of leadership. This is important to realize as we develop as leaders. The reality is that the person who doesn’t need help doesn’t have anyone to lead. Employees are inspired when they are needed, and they don’t think less of the leaders they help—they feel more connected with them.
